What Happened to Pinoy Idol?

“I’m confident po na hindi ako ang matatanggal. Kaya nalungkot po ako nang sabihin ni Raymond na magpaalam na ako kay Daryl dahil ako ang natanggal. Alam ko pong ginawa ko ang best ko last night,” reveals Pinoy Idol finalist Robby Navarro. - [PEP]
I like American Idol. In fact, I even followed the last season and was quite contented that David Cook won the title. However, I was saddened by the way Pinoy Idol turned out this year. I was quite hopeful that GMA would handle it well. But I guess I was expecting too much.
Aside from the fact that I was dismayed by the elimination of Robby Navarro and Mae Flores, the best singers in the lot, I too am quite disappointed with the way the whole Pinoy Idol competition is going. I was actually looking for a huge buzz or something. I was looking for the excitement I witnessed among friends, officemates, and even bloggers during the last Philippine Idol when it was still aired on ABC. I found none of that excitement as of the moment. What happened to Pinoy Idol? Has something gone wrong?
Well, I can say that here on my end, all I hear is deafening silence concerning the show. The people don’t seem to care about it. They don’t care about the host. They don’t care about the judges. They don’t care about the contestants. These are the same people I know who have been rooting for Pao and Mau in the last Idol setting. But now, why the indifference?
Perhaps because most of my friends are Kapamilyas? Well, I don’t really take sides when it comes to network wars. I just happen to watch shows I like, regardless of the station. And I watched few episodes of Pinoy Idol and all I see are mediocre singers trying to sing their piece, well perhaps with the exception of Robby and Mae. The entire show seemed forced and bland, and boring. There’s something lacking and I don’t even know what.
Perhaps because of the judges? Ogie, Jolina, and Wyngard aren’t the names we really expected to become judges of the show. Well, Wyngard did the stint during Star In A Million and not everyone was happy with the way he did his job. Some say he is a meanie with nothing but meanness to share.
Perhaps because of the host? Raymond may be great in hosting but Idol shows need someone with more charisma and can connect better with the masses. Well, my two cents’ worth.
I am no expert when it comes to this. I am just wondering why there is not much buzz about the show, when in fact, it created quite a clamor in the past, and it’s mother franchise was doing well in America and UK. What has gone wrong? I guess GMA needs to really consider this so that things will get better in the future. I am sad that such a big franchise didn’t get much attention this time around.

I totally agree. There’s something lacking in Pinoy Idol. I was really dismayed with their localized version of Idol. I watched American Idol even though I’m a kapamilya. I am a big fan of American Idol. I’d rather choose Philippine Idol than Pinoy Idol. Kasi mas nagcoconnect siya sa akin.
This is what happened if you’re a gaya-gaya. Just because ABS-CBN did it big time doesn’t mean GMA7 can do the same.
Simply put GMA7 doesn’t have the knowledge nor the capacity to compete with ABC-CBN’s offerings.
Just give up GMA7!
Well, I watch the show but not consistently because you are right we just can’t connect, specially with the gaydar host and pathetic judges. I hope they will change these people next season to hit the masses and make this show a hit show in the Philippines. I only watch it because I am excited that our kababayan Ram is vying for the number one spot. Of course Ram is not a very good singer but he got a singing talent. Though, he is kinda irritating about his being Bamboo wannabe and his round big eye everytime he perform.
But maybe without Ram I would leave that GMA show unviewed on my TV and watch National Geographic and Discovery Channel instead. So, as long as Ram is always there until the final (hehehe…), I will still patronize the show but not consistently.
Comment ko lang kay Robby, nag-inarte kasi last time na mag quit nalang siya dahil sa kadramahan kaya tinanggal ng GMA. weheheheh…
